Why you need a strong why

Why you need a strong “WHY” & without it you are bound to give up.

If you are tempted to give up, I want you to do this for me. Pause and write down the reasons why you started.

You see, as you commit yourself to pursue your life-goals, the reality is that the journey won’t be a walk in the park. Though the rewards are priceless, the journey will often be filled with ups and downs. Along the way, you’ll encounter hurdles that will give you all the reasons to quit.

However, starting with a strong “WHY” gives you the reason and the stamina to pick yourself up whenever you are knocked down in the pursuit of your mission. Not only that, a strong “WHY” will develop the burning desire and endurance which will serve as fuel to keep you going through the toughest moments. In other words, a strong “WHY” makes every form of trial and hardship bearable!

Imagine yourself standing in front of a very vicious fire that extends a couple of meters long and I ask you to go through it. Will you do that? Of course no! Just like any other rational human, you’ll step back! God forbid, but, what if your only child is trapped on the other side of the fire…? Suddenly you have a strong WHY and a compelling reason to go through the fire. You develop resilience because your reason to go through the fire is far much stronger than the serious burns you are likely to receive.

Thomas Carlyle said it best. “A person with a clear purpose will make progress, even on the roughest road. A person with no purpose will make no progress, even on the smoothest road.” I can’t agree more to this.

In my journey, every time I feel like quitting, my mental pictures of “WHERE” I am going and “WHY” I am going there rekindles my passion. This replenishes my hunger and the drive to stay on the treadmill even when the going gets tougher!

Don’t give up. There is always light at the end of the tunnel if you remain focused and just keep going.
